Words paint a picture

It was a curious tableau: the Boit sisters were in the church hall, waiting expressionlessly for someone or something. Julia (4) was on the floor with her doll. Mary (8) stood with her arms folded behind her back in the sunlit by the steps up to the stage where Jane (12) and Florence (14) were leaning silently against head-high Chinese vases in the velvet draped gloom.

Imagine my surprise when I experimented with People magazine’s habit of putting each person’s age in brackets. Oh, and this section doesn’t borrow from a literary work, includes no physics puns, and is not based on some bizarre half-remembered childhood incident.

That is how Edward Darley Boit’s daughters look to me.
